Through the course of life, the only constant is change. Often change is gradual and we barely notice. One day we look in the mirror and wonder when the grey hair arrived or the depth of a laugh line. Maybe we see that we have lived a few lifetimes in this one precious life, have faced numerous challenges, and can see all the victories that came after the setbacks. Every season brings a new energy that fosters change within ourselves if only we take notice.

As fall comes into season on September 23rd with the equinox, we move from a hurry-up and get-it-done vibe to an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and recenter. Our food interests will shift from the light summer fare to more hearty foods. You may even be in the “squirrel” mode with canning tomatoes or other homegrown food. Maybe you find yourself cleaning your home to prepare for our hunkering down season.

This continues to be a time to get outside and take in the magic of the fall season. Fall in New York is stunning as the leaves change colors and fall to the ground. One of my favorite pastimes is shuffling my feet through the fallen leaves to hear the crunching sound. Cooler temperatures at night and morning give way to warm days and of course… pumpkin everything!

Is this you when reading your test results?

When you open your chart and see your labwork has been loaded and ready for you to review, do all the numbers and markers look confusing? What do they even mean and what do they mean for you?

If you were like me and all your lab work came back with no concerns, it is possible that the markers simply are not out of range to a degree that indicates dis-ease or dis-ease patterns. This is actually a great sign! This allows us to identify certain patterns or possible deviations well before any physiological dysfunction occurs.

Maybe you have had your blood work completed more frequently through the years and don’t know how to improve your health in a manner that will affect the lab markers and see improvement in your cells. This happens to many people and they often feel frustrated. I know I did!

One of the most common blood tests, according to The American Association for Clinical Chemistry, is a complete blood count, or CBC, which takes a look at the health of your actual cells in the blood – red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

Imbalances or deviations in these markers can provide clues about what’s going on in your body including chronic infections, anemia, and poor immune function.

The CBC can also include a reticulocyte count, which measures the absolute count or percentage of newly released young red blood cells from your bone marrow.

When combined with a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), lipid panel, and a thorough thyroid panel (including TSH, T4, T3, and the thyroid antibody TPO), the results can provide significant insight into how well your body is adapting to its environment and maintaining overall health.
