None of these are bad. But every one of them asks something of us. That led me to another question I've been thinking about this week. Why can two people experience what appears to be the very same situation... ...yet have completely different responses? One seems to navigate it with relative ease. The other feels completely overwhelmed. Was the load different? Sometimes. But often... The difference isn't the load. It's the capacity available to carry it. Capacity Isn't About Being StrongWe often think capacity means toughness. Pushing harder. Doing more. Holding everything together. But that's not the kind of capacity I'm talking about. Capacity is our ability to adapt, recover, and continue moving through life without becoming overwhelmed. And the beautiful thing is... Capacity isn't fixed. It changes. Think about seasons in your own life. There have probably been times when you could juggle ten things without much effort. And other seasons when one unexpected phone call felt like too much. Neither version of you was weak. Your available capacity was simply different. What Adds Back?Most of us are very aware of what takes from us. Responsibilities Deadlines Poor sleep Unexpected challenges Constant notifications
But how often do we stop and ask a different question? What adds back? What consistently leaves you feeling calmer? More energized? More connected? More like yourself? Capacity isn't built only by reducing what's draining us. It's also built by intentionally making room for what restores us. Sometimes that's: A full night's sleep after several restless ones. Time in nature without an agenda. A nourishing meal shared with someone you enjoy. Laughing until your stomach hurts. A conversation that leaves you feeling lighter. Giving yourself permission to say "not this time" to something you're only saying "yes" to out of duty, obligation, guilt, or habit. Choosing presence over productivity, even if only for a little while.
None of these are dramatic. But over time, they quietly add back. A ReframePerhaps building capacity isn't about finding a way to carry more. Perhaps it's about creating enough margin that life doesn't always feel so heavy. Because the truth is... Life will continue to ask things of us. There will always be responsibilities. Opportunities. Unexpected detours. Moments of joy. Moments of grief. The goal isn't to eliminate the load. It's to become someone with the capacity to carry it without losing ourselves in the process. When I think about longevity, this is what comes to mind. Not simply living longer. But preserving the ability to keep engaging with life. To think clearly. To move comfortably. To recover well. To enjoy meaningful relationships. To remain curious. To laugh often. To continue adapting to whatever season life brings. I don't believe longevity is built by how much we can fit into a day. I believe it's built by what we consistently and intentionally make room for.
