Good morning! Last week, we explored the idea that the body is constantly adapting. This week, I'd like to continue that conversation. One thing I've noticed over the years is that many people underestimate how much they're carrying. Not physically. And often, they're carrying it so well that no one around them realizes how much weight is on their shoulders. Maybe you've experienced this yourself. You're showing up for work. Taking care of your family. Managing appointments. Keeping up with responsibilities. Trying to make healthy choices.
From the outside, everything looks fine. But inside, your system may be working very hard to keep up. Not All Load Looks Like StressWhen we hear the word stress, we often think of something difficult. A conflict. A deadline. A financial challenge.
But the body doesn't always make that distinction. A move. A promotion. Planning a wedding. Launching a business. Caring for a loved one.
Even good things require energy, attention, and adaptation. The body simply recognizes that more is being asked of it. The Pace of Modern LifeI sometimes wonder if part of the challenge is that we've come to expect ourselves to do everything, be everything, and feel amazing while doing it. Many of us remember a different pace of life. Stores were closed on Sundays. Holidays were quieter. Family dinner was family dinner. And when you left work, people generally stopped trying to reach you. I'm not suggesting we go backward. Almost no one is sitting around wishing for rotary phones, paper road maps, and having to wait until 7 PM to call someone long distance. But many of us do remember a time when life had more built-in pauses. Today, we're connected to everything all the time. The opportunities are incredible. But so is the amount of input. And often, we expect ourselves to do it all while remaining energized, productive, patient, focused, healthy, and well-rested. That's a lot to ask of any system. Including the human body. When Good Things Become More ThingsThis is where it can get confusing. Many people who come to me are actively trying to support their health. They're exercising. Taking supplements. Listening to podcasts. Reading books. Trying new strategies.
None of those things are bad. But every input requires energy to process. Sometimes the issue isn't that we're doing the wrong things. Sometimes we're simply asking our system to carry too much at once.
